Oh Shift: It’s Time To Pivot!

Career pivoting has become more common among professionals, especially since the onset of COVID-19 which caused plenty of uncertainty, profound changes, and even burnout.

Maybe you were laid off, find that your current position is one of doing more with less, or are just seeking more meaningful work. Whatever the case, you find that it’s time to pivot. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many people feel the same way. A record 4.4 million employees quit their jobs in September 2021.

Whatever the reason for considering a new career, here are three tips to help you shift forward>>>

REVIEW AND REFLECT: EVALUATE THE NOW. Before you start updating your resume and sending it out, understand your value. The best thing you can do is thoroughly evaluate where you are today, your skill set, passions, and experience. Ask yourself, how you could apply them to a different job or field. Create a forum for leaning into collective wisdom to help your evaluation.

THINK POSSIBILITIES: CREATE A SHORT LIST OF IDEAS. Before deciding on your future career, it’s vital to perform thorough research and to know your options. Even if you have a career in mind, you may come across something you hadn’t previously thought of. Knowing all your career choices can help you make the right decision based on your interests and skills. Think of possibilities and create a shortlist.

GET COMFORTABLE WITH RISKS. As you consider pivoting to a new career, risks are certainly a part of the equation. So how do you get comfortable with risks?

  • Give yourself permission to start again
  • Have the courage to not have all the answers
  • Imagine the worst-case scenario
  • Imagine the best-case scenario
  • Get realistic about potential risks
  • Keep your eyes on the prize
