By: Stephanie Hancock

Women continue to break barriers and make history. We are changing the face of business. If your desire is to be part of this change in business know that it can happen. There are plenty of opportunities available. The following suggestions will hopefully inspire you to move from your current seat to the C-suite.
Opportunities Abound
Reaching the C-Suite is the highest executive level in an organization. Most are familiar with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), but there are many other roles to aspire to. There is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Chief Diversity Officer (CDO), and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to name a few. As our world continues to expand so will the roles in the executive office and you need to be prepared to step into your power.

DEVELOP THE MINDSET OF AN EXECUTIVE It is crucial to have a role model and have repeated exposure to senior executives. As an example, if you want to transition from manager to director, associate with directors and learn what it means to be a director. The same can be said if you want to move from director to VP; you need to learn what it means to be a VP. By exposing yourself to individuals at this level you will hear the dialogue and learn the way…the thought process. Be intentional about whom you will look to gain exposure from. Think outside the organization as well. As an example, join a board of directors for a cause that you are enthusiastic about. This will provide you with the opportunity to connect with executives. Listen to and participate in the conversations, ask questions, and learn how to navigate difficult conversations to solve problems.
LEARN THE BUSINESS As you are developing the mindset of an executive it is important to know your business. Where are the revenue streams, and how is the revenue managed? If your company produces a product(s), who are the creators? How does your brand team decide how each product will be branded? What about data analytics, product marketing, digital marketing, software engineers, and the sales team? Building relationships with the subject matter experts and senior management will enhance your practical knowledge in each discipline. This will also shift your perspective as you solve problems. Having a broader understanding of the business will allow you to think more strategically.
EMBRACE METRICS In today’s data-driven economy all businesses rely on accurate data to make informed decisions. Understanding how metrics drive action will connect the business dots even more. The goal with metrics should be to strengthen and grow the business, measure performance, identify problems, and ensure that each team is aligned with the goals of the organization. Do not limit yourself and say that you are not a numbers person. Metrics are crucial for an organization’s survival. Each role in the C-Suite relies on metrics.
SET INTENTIONAL GOALS You want to be known as results driven and analytical. Set quarterly goals that will allow you to take on higher levels of responsibility to gain the necessary experience and knowledge needed to advance your position. Do not fear failure. Fail early so you can have time to course correct and move forward with attaining your goal. This attitude will serve you well when you are in the C-suite. Celebrate all sizes of your wins and take time to reflect at the end of each quarter.
GET A SPONSOR Historically men have held the top leadership positions in both large and small organizations. Men are typically conditioned to compete and lead. They are also typically provided with internal and external support systems that position them for this level of success. As you learn about the business, make it one of your goals to connect with senior executives who may be potential sponsors. A sponsor is a person that has influence and will lobby on your behalf when opportunities arise. They provide you with the necessary support as you expand your reach.
The road to the C-Suite will not be without challenges. As you manifest the outcome that includes the challenges. Create a plan and develop a mindset that will help you overcome these things. Doing this will allow you to stay the course. Enjoy the journey.
